Albright）在印度孟買召開的「販運婦女兒童會議」（Trafficking in Women and Children Conference）指出「繼毒品及槍彈之後，人口販運是國際有組織犯罪第三大獲利來源，可能是全球成長最快速的犯罪行業」（it is now the third largest source of profits for international organized crime, behind only drugs and guns. It is perhaps the fastest growing criminal enterprise in the world.）；販運婦女兒童是「現代奴隸交易」（modern-day slave trade）。

該月29日在菲律賓馬尼拉召開的亞太十六國會議，與會者推測在亞洲每年人口交易的被害人高達二十五萬人，其中大多數是婦女和女孩1，全球的被害人超過一百萬人，這些被害人在被強迫或被欺騙的情況下，最終成為妓女、家庭佣人和血汗工廠中的奴工2。
